This happened to me a few times already.

Last time some random guy wanted my phone and I told him I had no phone. Surely he didn't believe me (who would he in a world when the mobile penetration is almost at 100%...) When he realised I had a complete lack of interest in the things he was saying he told me not to run away, because he was playing football. (WTF?!) To make him even more confused I told him that I was playing basketball which I think is a lot more interesting sport than football, turned around, said 'bye' and walked away.

This just worked, he became so confused he couldn't do anything with the situation.

Re: On being mugged

Sorry to hear that. Well done for coping so well. You did much better than I would have done.

Speak soon.

Joe

Re: On being mugged

Ah, that's not cool.
Glad you coped with it quite well, I'll come down and see you soon.

No one you recognised then?

Re: On being mugged

I don't know why such stories are always totally new to me. Maybe it's really like Pratchett writes in Guards! Guards!, people taller than most walk surprisingly unsurprising paths...

Btw, a normal key the pointy side looking through your fingers, and even the short but thin side of an iPod is a good weapon to hit someone real hard. I guess the new, thinner iPod touch is even better ;-) iPod vs. knife, I'm curious who wins.

And a few hours box training will do some good too.

Re: On being mugged

Sorry to hear that. Absolutely, it was this sort of thing that drove me out of London and move to Cornwall. It's a complete head fuck in so many ways.

One thing I forgot to mention though was how different people's reaction was compared to when I was a teenager. I was able to get the help of the driver, the builder and the police all to a satisfactory degree, which helped. When I was a teenager, I was never taken seriously when something like this happened. I often got the feeling that it was viewed that teenagers are in their own world, somehow only the responsibility of themselves and teachers. Load of rubbish of course. Anywho, rambling.

Re: On being mugged

My first year in London I was beaten and robbed whilst out and about in Soho of all places. To be fair I was fairly drunk and it was late at night, but it's not the kind of thing you expect to happen to you in Soho of all places. Sounds like you did the right thing by minimising your risk - unfortunately I didn't have that choice (as I was hit over the head from behind).

Also, it left me a nervous wreck. Glad you have your shit together better than I.
